Heat
Daily use of hairdryers causes fragility of the hair and may cause it to break and fall out. Beware also of dyes, relaxers and hair sprays, which may lead to similar consequences if used in excess.
Drugs
The use, or misuse, of certain drugs can cause hair loss: blood thinners, acne drugs rich in vitamin A, anabolic steroids or drugs for arthritis, depression, gout, heart problems or hypertension are just some of the drugs that could have this effect among the side effects.
Iron
Hair loss may be caused by a lack of iron, which is essential for maintaining healthy hair. If iron is the cause, you may also notice brittle nails, yellow or pale skin, shortness of breath, weakness and rapid heartbeat.
Lack of protein
Lack of protein can cause hair loss as the body's protective response, aimed precisely at conserving the protein already stored. Increasing protein intake through foods such as meat, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds and beans may be the solution.
Stress
Stress can cause hair loss: the body is particularly affected and hair follicles can be affected.
Pregnancy
During pregnancy, hormones act to preserve hair, making it look thicker; at the end of pregnancy, this effect is reversed and there tends to be a reduction in hair. Within a few months (between three and six) the situation should rebalance.
Eating disorder
Eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia, can cause hair loss. This happens because the body does not receive the nutrients it needs to grow and maintain healthy hair.
Weight reduction intervention
Weight reduction surgery can have unwanted consequences on the hair: if zinc levels are too low, it can happen that some locks are lost after bariatric surgery. This can be remedied with zinc supplements.
Too much intensity
Hair loss can be caused by using too much shampoo or brushing too hard, especially when the hair is wet. Beware also of too tight braids, which can cause hair breakage.
Smoking
Smoking is bad for your health, it is well known, and also for your hair. The toxins in cigarette smoke can ruin hair follicles and prevent hair from growing and staying on your head.
