Man has always tried, throughout the ages, to find the elixir of long life. Think of the likes of Dorian Grey and Dr. Faust, think of searches for the fountain of youth, the sacred Graal, the philosopher's stone. In short, youth was a continuous search.

In 2023, now, multibillionaires can afford elite treatments to preserve their youth, through cures, specialists and medicines. However, for ordinary mortals this is not possible, and so we all need to work much harder not to succumb to the aggression of time.

Both psychologists and scientists, fortunately for us, have over the years given numerous tips on how to lead a lifestyle such that you can keep yourself young (youthful) for as long as possible. Following them will not give you back your 20s, of course, but you know: age is just a matter of your head and attitudes.

Don't worry, your age doesn't define you.
It's not that if you're 50 you have to live like a 50-year-old, just as if you're 70 you have to live the retired life. Age is a state of mind, it's how you feel in your head and in your body. At the end of the day, numbers are overrated. Even if the candles you blow out are a high number, that in no way compels you to feel that way. This may be an obvious statement, but we assure you it is not.

You must always be optimistic
The underlying thought that should guide you is that life always holds surprises. Making an extra smile throughout the day, finding the silver lining even in negative events, making an extra altruistic gesture, are all actions that will help you live better and feel better. Feeling good is living well, living well also means feeling younger and more active. Sadness and depression, on the other hand, are enemies of happiness, at any age.

Don't isolate yourself, ever!
As age advances, it is normal, friends decrease, opportunities for real social interaction are fewer, but this should not discourage. The important thing is to seek as many opportunities as possible to interact with friends, relatives, colleagues; talk, socialize and discuss, not necessarily about busy topics. Sometimes even nonsense helps keep you active, young and in the world.

Having a few extra commitments is only good
Being busy, as age advances, is one of the secrets that keeps one young. Therefore, one should try to participate as much as possible in organised leisure/recreational activities, not necessarily serious or demanding ones. Even if you get to feel too 'full' of things to do, it is the best way to stay in shape and maintain physical fitness, mental speed and also, and perhaps above all, interest in others and the world.

Always stay connected to the world around you
Not meant as web-connected in the sense of various devices and the Internet. Connected in the sense of staying informed about what is going on around, reading news facts, developing critical thoughts about the political and economic situation, comparing and debating with other people. Disinterest in current affairs is one of the great problems of aging, especially of the mind. Do not make this mistake.

Always train the mind, at every age
Just as the body must be exercised regularly if you want to stay fit, as the years pass, mental elasticity also decreases, but it is possible to train it and keep it strong for longer. How? For example by doing crosswords, sudoku puzzles, board games, interested in creative and stimulating hobbies, preferably non-sedentary ones, so as to combine mental and physical training.

Don't let the past condition you
One of the most difficult exercises to complete. Obviously, we are the fruit of our past experiences, but these experiences must not, or should not, condition how we live and see the future. It is difficult, of course, but lugging around past regrets and remorse does not help, ever, in any way. Continuing to take care of one's physical appearance, dressing smartly and appropriately, taking proper care of one's hair (and beard) and using skin and body products, is fundamental to keeping oneself young in all respects. In this way, you can always fill your day with playful activities that will not interfere with your work schedule. Incorporating, in the right spaces, moments for the mind and body is essential in order not to get lost in the millions of things to do every day. Youth is a state of mind, it is true, but after all, the body also plays its part. A healthy, fit body also helps the mind feel young. A proper diet, healthy habits and regular exercise are the three mantras to adhere to in order not to find oneself ruined. Already many young people, who live in an unregulated manner, find themselves at 30 years of age completely destroyed in body and mind. The older one gets, the more the care of one's physique is indispensable to maintain a youthful mentality as well.
