Drinking three coffees a day helps you live longer

Drinking coffee, particularly two to three cups a day, is not only associated with a lower risk of heart disease and dangerous heart rhythms, but also with living longer, according to studies presented at the 71st annual scientific session of the American College of Cardiology.

These trends held true for both people with and without cardiovascular disease.

Kistler and his team used data from the UK BioBank, a large-scale prospective database with health information on more than half a million people who have been followed for at least 10 years.

If you drink two to three cups of ground coffee a day, you have a 27 percent lower risk of dying than non-drinkers and a 20 percent lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

"The results suggest that light to moderate consumption of ground, instant and decaffeinated coffee should be considered part of a healthy lifestyle."

After a mean follow-up time of more than 12 years, scientists found that all types of coffee were linked to a reduction in deaths from all causes.

The greatest risk reduction was observed with two to three cups per day, which compared with no coffee consumption was associated with a 14%, 27%, and 11% lower probability of death for decaffeinated, ground, and soluble preparations, respectively.
