High blood sugar, the symptoms that should alarm you

High blood sugar occurs when there is an excess of glucose in the blood. Typical of diabetes mellitus, high blood sugar (or hyperglycaemia) must be treated in time so that it does not cause a whole series of health complications.

In most cases, high blood sugar is caused by diabetes mellitus, but people who do not suffer from this disease but have risk factors may also be affected.

Risk factors
In most cases, high blood glucose is caused by diabetes mellitus. However, people who do not suffer from this disease, but have risk factors, may have high blood glucose values. Such risk factors are hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis, inflammation, infection, stress following a heart attack or stroke, treatment with corticosteroids or tricyclic antidepressants.

Symptoms of high blood sugar
Hyperglycaemia can manifest itself through a number of symptoms that should alarm one and suggest one should remedy them as soon as possible. The main symptoms of high blood sugar include general fatigue, headaches, weight loss that has no other cause, continuous feeling of thirst, dryness inside the mouth, increased need to urinate especially at night, blurred vision, continuous infections.

How to prevent high blood sugar
If you suffer from high blood sugar, you should consult your doctor or a diabetes specialist in order to address the problem properly. In addition to the doctor's advice, it is generally suggested to exercise in order to combat obesity and overweight, drink plenty of water to counteract dehydration, avoid stressful situations, and get a regular night's rest.

Possible complications
If high blood glucose is not restored to normal levels, chronic complications of the cardiovascular or nervous systems but also of the kidneys and eyes may occur. High blood sugar can also cause diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic syndrome.
